The fantasy Butterflies, Op. 39 (1977), by Pehr Henrik Nordgren (1944–2008), is based on a Japanese story of the same name from Lafcadio Hearn’s Kwaidan collection (1904). Its protagonist is an old man named Takahama, who is nearing death. Every day, a white butterfly comes to sit by his bedside. The old man’s nephew, who is caring for him, notices that the butterfly always flies to a nearby cemetery and lands on a particular grave. On the day of Takahama’s death, it is revealed that the grave belongs to Akiko – his fiancée, who died just a few days before their wedding, more than fifty years earlier. Takahama had promised to remain faithful to her memory – and he kept his promise.
