With this casting, I really wanted to recreate one of Renault's distinctive service vans of the 70s and 80s. They had a white and yellow half and half colour scheme with a black band running through the centre. Everything was set in my mind as to how I would tackle this project.

Unfortunately, I made the decision early on to paint in the central black belt. In hindsight, I should have applied a black decal and cut it to shape. Since the casting has quite deep panel lines for the doors and bonnet, a lot of the black paint seeped through the areas I thought that I had taped and sealed. Sadly that proved to not be the case. I had a bit of a nightmare with the paint but instead of starting from scratch, I thought I would try to rectify the issues. It wasn't a success but I felt it important that I document my fails in the same way I would my wins.

The Renault 4 was in production from 1961 to 1992. Its simple design was based on the formula set by the Citroën 2CV but modernised for the 60s. The 2CV philosophy was getting on for 30 years old by the time the 4 arrived, and the production car had been around for 13 years by 1961. Renault produced a rugged and basic car which had greater refinement and a modern body fitted. It proved hugely popular across the globe, and the fourgonette van became the idiosyncratic boulangerie van with its giraffe hatch roof.
