Grind spark and weld testing on a Ford 8.8 rear axle housing. The internet "experts" all over can't seem to agree what the cast center section of the axle is made of. Most say cast steel, some say cast iron...but the two materials weld very differently.
My testing here and some more research from Hiltsy (they make a DIY weld Fbody Camaro torque arm mount for the 8.8) confirmed my suspicion that they are nodular iron (ductile iron).
I was able to successfully weld it with my MIG and stainless wire (thanks to its extra nickel content compared to mild wire). I did a worst-case-scenario test with no preheat or postheat and a weak design with lots of leverage against it. Bashing the 1/4 steel with a sledge just bent it, with no breakage or cracking of the weld. So I'm reasonably sure my own DIY torque arm design should work well.
