9 दिसंबर** को सूरज ख्वास ने अपने बेटे का पहला जन्मदिन मनाने के लिए देहरादून के सेलाकुई बाजार में अपने पांच दोस्तों को बुलाया था। योजना यह थी कि पहले एक दुकान से शराब खरीदी जाए और फिर अविनाश नेगी की चाय की दुकान पर जाया जाए। इस समूह में सूरज ख्वास, अविनाश नेगी, यज्ञराज अवस्थी, सुमित और दो नाबालिग शामिल थे। शराब की दुकान के पास घूमते हुए उनकी मुलाकात दो भाइयों—एंजेल चकमा और माइकल चकमा—से हो गई। कुछ ही मिनटों में एंजेल पर चाकू से हमला कर दिया गया और माइकल गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया। पुलिस में दी गई शिकायत में माइकल ने कहा कि हमले से पहले समूह ने नस्लीय गालियां दी थीं।

माइकल जब एंजेल को अस्पताल पहुंचाने के लिए जूझ रहा था, उसी दौरान यह समूह अपने काम में लौट गया। पुलिस के मुताबिक, उन्होंने शराब खरीदी, नेगी की दुकान पर गए और वहां जश्न मनाया।

*26 दिसंबर* को इलाज के दौरान एंजेल की मौत हो गई। उसके सिर और रीढ़ की हड्डी में गंभीर चोटें थीं, जो जानलेवा साबित हुईं। यह हत्या उत्तराखंड और पूर्वोत्तर भारत दोनों में आक्रोश का कारण बनी। एंजेल त्रिपुरा का रहने वाला था और आरोप है कि चाकू मारने से पहले उसे ‘चीनी’ और ‘मोमो’ कहकर बुलाया गया। इसके बाद उत्तराखंड पुलिस ने यज्ञराज अवस्थी की तलाश में दो टीमें भेजीं। अवस्थी फरार है और माना जा रहा है कि वह नेपाल में है, जहां का वह मूल निवासी है।
