Boulevard Saint-Martin is part of the chain of Grands Boulevards, which, from west to east, consists of Boulevards de la Madeleine, des Capucines, des Italiens, Montmartre, Poissonnière, Bonne-Nouvelle, Saint-Denis, Saint-Martin, du Temple, des Filles-du-Calvaire, and Beaumarchais.
The Grands Boulevards are the quintessential Parisian boulevards. They are located on the Right Bank, on the site of the former fortifications of Charles V and Louis XIII.

Boulevard Saint-Martin takes its name from its proximity to Rue Saint-Martin, where the former priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs was located, now home to the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM).
It was called Boulevard de l'Opéra from 1781 to 1794, when the Opéra occupied the Salle de la Porte-Saint-Martin.
