Formations are fleeting these days, in-possession or out-of-possesion. Some formations are associated with certain teams and managers. A 4-3-3 conveys memories of Guardiola or Klopp, 4-4-2 could mean catenaccio or England’s “Golden Generation”.

But how did formations begin? Who decided what the first formations would be?

This is the third in a series, written by Jonathan Wilson, exploring the entire history of football. How formations came into existence, how the rules evolved the formations, and how altering a position caused outrage.
