Volos Greece 4K Summer Evening Walk - Panagia Goritsa, Agia Triada, & Agios Konstantinos Church Tour

The Feast of the Dormition (Dekapentavgoustos) is a deeply spiritual period in the Orthodox Church, during which the faithful turn their hearts and prayers to the Virgin Mary with deep reverence. For fifteen days leading up to the feast, the church bells ring at dusk, calling believers to gather and sing the Small and Great Supplicatory Canons. These hymns are sung with a profound sense of mourning and devotion, seeking comfort and solace from the Mother of Christ.

On this beautiful and serene summer evening, we begin our walk by exploring the church of Panagia Tripa in Goritsa, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. This unique church is situated within a cave at the foot of Goritsa Hill. It first opened for worship in 1892, and in 1950, the original structure was expanded with a larger building in front of the cave. Outside, we are greeted by the sight of the wavy sea dancing with a stunningly cloudy sky in the background. After taking in the views from the church's courtyard, we head towards Anavros Beach.

As we proceed, we pass the iconic Centaurus sculpture, located at the eastern roundabout entrance of Volos. Centaurs, creatures of Greek mythology, symbolize the intense weather phenomena observed in the region, with myth placing them in the magical land of Pelion. Continuing our walk, we pass the estuary of the Anavros stream on our left and a small chapel dedicated to Agia Paraskevi, likely constructed by a local resident in honor of the saint.

We then reach Anavros Beach, where we catch a glimpse of the Avra, Anamma, and Almpyra restaurants as visitors begin to gather, eager to enjoy the beautiful summer evening by the sea. Walking through Anavros Park, we arrive at the church of Agia Triada, where we take a brief look inside before continuing our walk towards the Agios Konstantinos area.

As we proceed, we pass by various cafes and restaurants, already bustling with people relaxing and enjoying their refreshments or meals. We finally arrive at the church of Agios Konstantinos, where we take a brief tour of this historic site. The church stands on the site where, according to tradition, there was a stone-built shrine dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen before the city of Volos was even founded. With the establishment of the Agios Konstantinos neighborhood, a wooden church was built to meet the religious needs of the parishioners, and the first divine service was held on April 19, 1898. The new church of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Saints Constantine and Helen was built based on the designs of architect Aristotelis Zachos, following a decision by the then-Mayor of Volos, Mr. Spyridon Spiridis. The foundation stone was laid in 1927, and the church was inaugurated with due grandeur and splendor on May 18, 1936, by the then Metropolitan of Dimitriados, Joachim.

We conclude our walk outside the church, taking in the beautiful sky and surroundings, while hearing the bells calling the faithful to attend the Paraklesis to the Virgin Mary that will follow.
