The Sand Whiting (Sillago ciliata), also known as Summer, Silver, or Blue-nose Whiting, is a popular marine and estuarine fish found along the eastern coast of Australia and in parts of the Pacific.
Physical Characteristics
Appearance: They have an elongate, torpedo-shaped body that is silvery-white with yellowish sides.
Identification Key: A distinct dark blue-black blotch is present at the base of the pectoral fins, which distinguishes them from the similar Yellowfin Whiting.
Size: They commonly reach lengths of 25–30 cm, though they can grow up to 50 cm and weigh approximately 1.25 kg.
Habitat and Behavior
Distribution: Found from Cape York in Queensland south to Tasmania, as well as Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea.
Environment: They inhabit shallow inshore waters, including coastal beaches, sandbars, bays, and estuaries up to the tidal limit.
Feeding: They are benthic carnivores that use their conical snouts to forage for worms, crustaceans (yabbies, prawns), and bivalve molluscs (pipis) in the sand.
Defense: When alarmed, they are known to bury themselves in soft sand or mud.
Recreational Fishing (2026 Guidelines)
Sand whiting are highly targeted for their fighting ability on light gear and their excellent eating quality.
Best Time: Most active from late spring through summer (November to March), particularly at dawn, dusk, and tide changes.
Gear: Light spinning tackle (6–8 ft rod, 1000–2500 size reel) with 4–6 lb line and small long-shank hooks (size 4–8).
Bait: Live baits like bloodworms, beach worms, nippers (yabbies), and soldier crabs are most effective.
Regulations (Current for 2026):
NSW: Minimum legal size of 27 cm; bag limit of 20 (combined for all whiting species).
Queensland: Minimum legal size of 23 cm; bag limit of 30 (combined whiting species).
Culinary Use
The flesh is white, tender, and moist with a delicate sweet flavor, often considered nearly equal to King George Whiting. It is versatile and can be pan-fried, steamed, or used for sashimi
