Canada's Global Food Footprint: from voluntary corporate reporting to mandatory due diligence

Despite widespread attempts to ‘eat local,’ many of the lifestyle factors in Canada rely on the production of food crop commodities that can only be grown in tropical ecosystems, far from the geographies of consumption. In this talk, Sophia will introduce her research on regulatory options that mandate corporate due diligence whereby businesses are held responsible for addressing and reversing the environmental and social harms embedded in their global supply chains. She will end with some inspiring stories from her work with cacao farmers in Belize, Vanuatu, and Côte d’Ivoire to demonstrate how cacao produced using agroecology practices can offer a pathway for land restoration, income diversification, and community resilience.
Sophia Carodenuto is Assistant Professor in UVic’s Department of Geography, where she leads the Environmental Governance Group. She is a political geographer whose research is focused on the geography of natural resource governance and the intersection of public policy, political economy, and environmental justice. Her scholarship foregrounds practice-based knowledge with the broad aim to improve lives and ecosystems by identifying the unique needs of communities of place.
