Hello Everyone,
In this video, I dive into one of my favorite lines in the Philidor Defense, where an early queen trade leads to a queenless middlegame. A position that’s often underestimated but incredibly rich strategically.
We’ll focus on the setup with Bg5 and I’ll review two of my own games that illustrate how to handle these positions as Black. These games show how the Philidor can give you a solid structure, active piece play, and long-term plans even after the queens come off.
Along the way, I also go over key opening principles: how to develop efficiently, control the center, and transition into a favorable endgame plan.
In this video you’ll learn:
How to play the Philidor Defense after an early queen trade (Qxd8+ Kxd8).
The ideas behind the Bg5 setup and how to neutralize it.
Typical pawn structures and piece placements in the queenless middlegame.
How to use simple positional principles to outplay your opponent.
Lessons from real practical games that highlight what works — and what doesn’t.
Whether you’re new to the Philidor or looking to refine your understanding of its endgame-heavy nature, this video gives you a complete overview of how to make the most of these quiet but powerful positions.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe if you’re enjoying this Philidor series. More practical examples and theoretical breakdowns coming soon!
