一個佛教人的樣子，要能把我的慈悲、智慧、忍耐、道德影響所有人。《聽星雲大師說：體相用》

佛教裡面講真理
Buddhism talks about truths.
真理不是那麼簡單
But truths are never simple.
它必須具備有體、相、用
They must consist of
essence, form and function.
好像法身
This is like the Dharma body
如來佛法身
of the Tathagata,
法身有體、相、用
it consists of essence, form and function.
我們的心
Take our mind,
真心
our sincere mind, for example,
《大乘起信論》說
the Sastra on the Awakening of
Faith in the Mahayana mentions
一心開二門
"two-gates-in-one-mind",
有心真如門
aka. the gate of suchness,
有心生滅門
and the gate of arising and ceasing.
真如門的真心
the sincere mind
in the gate of suchness
它就是有體、相、用
is of essence, form and function.
就像我們一個人
This is like every one of us
有身體
has a body (essence).
光有這個身體
If you doesn't move your body,
不動也不行
it just won't do.
他也要有相貌所以要莊嚴
You also need to a solemn look (form)
相貌要給人家的看了歡喜
so that people feel delighted
when they see you.
要有外相
External form does count.
光是體積大沒有用
It's useless to only have a bulky size.
要有相貌莊嚴 萬德莊嚴
Your looks have to be solemn.
體、相具備了你還要有用
After you possess essence and form, you
also shouldn't miss out the function part.
要會用
Try to make it functional.
比方說你一個老和尚
Suppose you were an old monk
一個大法師
or a great monastic
你有道貌岸然的身體
who had a dignified body,
有慈悲的、莊嚴的德相
and a compassionate and solemn look,
你怎麼樣來運用呢
how would you make use of it?
或者我用語言說法
I could give an appealing speech
on the Dharma.
我用慈悲、氣質感化你
I could use my compassion and temperament
to influence and reform you.
我向你微笑
I smile to you.
我向你點頭
I nod at you.
我讓你感覺到
I make you feel that
我能可以加持你
I can bless you,
加被你、攝受你
empower you, gather and receive you.
我有用
I have my own function.
所以我們像讀書
The same applies to
讀書的人也是一樣的
one who studies.
我要把讀書的這個道理的本體
I need to let the essence
我也要能真正的這個道理
of the real truth
究竟的道理
or ultimate truth
本體 我要認識它
get through you.
這個體是什麼
What is essence?
是金的、銀的
Gold or silver?
像佛像 金、銀、銅、鐵
A Buddha statue can be made of
gold, silver, copper and iron ;
木材、紙畫
or carved out of wood,
or painted on paper.
它都有一樣 都一個體
It has its essence.
然後再有相貌出來
The statue also has its looks,
畫出他的三十二相、八十種好
say, 32 principal marks
and 80 subsidiary characteristics,
這個佛像很莊嚴
which make the Buddha statue
look solemn
這佛像很慈悲
and compassionate.

然後你這個要有靈感
It also needs to be able to give
a sympathetic resonance
你要會用
which is its function.
所以我們拜佛了
We pay homage to the Buddha
覺得這個佛能可以加被我
because we feel that the Buddha
can empower us,
能加持我
bless us,
就是我的受用
and give us benefits.
這是佛給我的受用
The Buddha can give us benefits.
所以我們學佛法
So we study the Buddha Dharma
一樣的
for the same reason.
要對世間
In the world,
我們有了佛法做我的理體
we've the Buddha Dharma
as our truth essence.
我們也有了
We also
讓人家都知道
let others know that
我是一個佛教徒
I'm a Buddhist
我有名義
not just nominally.
我有個慈悲的樣子
I have a compassionate look.
我要有一個佛法的
I need to learn the Buddha Dharma
一個佛教人的樣子
for me to look like a Buddhist.
然後我就要能把我的慈悲
Then I have to use my traits
such as compassion,
智慧、忍耐、道德
wisdom, forbearance, and morals
來影響大家
to influence
用之於給大家
and benefit everybody,
讓大家都能
so that all of you can
在我的體、相、用上
be moved by my essence, form and function
都能受到我的利益
and get from me some benefits,
受到我的加持
blessings,
受到我的庇佑
and protection.
所以我覺得每一個佛教徒
So I feel every Buddhist should
對體、相、用都要能明白
understand what are essence,
form and function.
