The Bajrang Setu is India's first glass suspension bridge, currently nearing completion in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. It is being constructed as a modern and safer replacement for the iconic, but now closed, Lakshman Jhula bridge. The bridge is expected to open to the public by December 2025 or early 2026.
Key Features and Details
Location: Spans the sacred Ganga River in the Tapovan area of Rishikesh, near the old Lakshman Jhula.
Structure: A cable suspension bridge blending modern engineering with traditional spiritual architecture. The entrance towers are inspired by the design of the sacred Kedarnath Temple.
Dimensions: It is 132 meters long and 8 meters wide.
Design: The bridge features three lanes: a central 5-meter-wide steel deck for two-wheelers and light vehicles, and 1.5-meter-wide glass walkways on both sides for pedestrians.
Glass Walkways: The pedestrian paths are made of 66 mm thick, multi-layered, reinforced glass panels, offering a thrilling, transparent view of the Ganga river flowing beneath.
Safety: Designed with earthquake-resistant technology, meeting Seismic Zone IV standards to ensure a long operational lifespan.
Cost: The construction cost is estimated to be around ₹60-68 crore.
Significance
The Bajrang Setu is anticipated to become a major tourist attraction and a new landmark for Rishikesh, which is known as the "Yoga Capital of the World". It will boost connectivity, ease traffic congestion on the nearby Ram Jhula, and offer a unique blend of adventure and spiritual experience for visitors.
