L’esecuzione qui presentata non ha conosciuto una larga diffusione a causa di un grave problema tecnico. Come chiarisce Mortimer H. Frank (A. Toscanini - The NBC years, pag.102) il concerto venne registrato dalla NBC, per la trasmissione in differita. Sfortunatamente, una connessione allentata causò un ground loop, lasciando un ronzio sul nastro, e si rese necessario il filtraggio delle basse frequenze per rendere l'audio accettabile per la trasmissione. Questo filtraggio privò il suono orchestrale del corpo e della presenza necessari. La lavorazione del nastro deve essere stata accurata, tanto da rendere possibile la pubblicazione in disco della Sinfonia n. 4, (inclusa poi nel set delle Sinfonie complete); oppure bisogna supporre che, in previsione della pubblicazione, la Sinfonia sia stata registrata anche dai tecnici della Victor. Evidentemente non si ravvisò la necessità di procedere parimenti con il Prometeo, di cui era già disponibile l’ottima performance del 1944.
Ho ricavato la registrazione da un vinile della Toscanini Edition americana (ATS 1016/1024); l’intera esecuzione è accompagnata da un evidente ronzio, a cui si somma un armonico su nota fissa (…quasi: inizia con un Mi4 per giungere, al termine del brano, a un Fa4). Filtraggi tentati diversi anni fa risultavano deludenti: comprimevano il suono e indebolivano, ma non rimuovevano il disturbo. Nel frattempo i software si sono evoluti… io invece non tanto, per la verità, ma ho potuto appoggiarmi alla superiore perizia tecnica di H.p.H. Filtrando, e anche usando un pizzico di AI, è inevitabile che qualche cosa si perda, ma, delle varie versioni realizzate, questa è quella che mi pare meno riduca la qualità sonora; nella seconda parte del track, ogni tanto l’armonico fa capolino, ma non nella misura così invasiva del tape originale.

This performance was not widely distributed due to a serious technical problem. As Mortimer H. Frank explains (A. Toscanini - The NBC years, p.102), the concert was recorded by NBC, for delayed broadcast. Unfortunately, a loose connection, causing a ground loop, imposed a hum on the tape, necessitating that low frequencies be filtered in order to make the audio acceptable for broadcast. This filtering deprived the sound of the orchestra of requisite weight und presence. The tape processing must have been careful enough to make the release of Symphony No. 4 on disc (later included in the set of the complete Symphonies); or we must assume that, in anticipation of its publication, the Symphony was also recorded by Victor's technicians. Evidently, there was no need to proceed similarly with Prometheus, of which the excellent 1944 performance was already available.
I obtained the recording from a vinyl of the American Toscanini Edition (ATS 1016/1024); the entire performance is accompanied by an evident buzz, to which is added a harmonic on a fixed note (… almost: it starts with an E4 to reach, at the end of the piece, an F4). My filtering attempts made several years ago were disappointing: the sound was compressed and the noise was weakened, but not removed. In the meantime, software has evolved… I, on the other hand, not so much, to be honest, but I was able to rely on the superior technical expertise of H.p.H. Filtering, and also using a bit of AI, it is inevitable that something gets lost, but, of the various versions made, this is the one that seems to me to reduce the sound quality the least; in the second part of the track, every now and then the harmonic peeps out, but not to the extent of the original tape.
