Turkish security forces, medical teams and search-and-rescue personnel are examining the crash site of a jet carrying Libya’s chief of staff Mohammed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad, who died when the aircraft went down shortly after departing Ankara.
Libya’s internationally recognised prime minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah confirmed that Al-Haddad was killed in what he described as a “tragic and painful incident” while returning from an official visit to Turkey. Four other people were also aboard the aircraft, including senior military officials and a staff photographer.
Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the jet took off from Esenboga Airport at 1710 GMT en route to Tripoli, but radio contact was lost about 40 minutes later. Authorities later located the wreckage near Kesikkavak village in Ankara’s Haymana district.
The crash marks a major loss for Libya’s military leadership and has prompted condolences from senior officials, as investigations continue into the cause of the incident.
