Elegant and Cozy Christmas Cookies with Royal Icing, perfect for the Holiday Season
There’s nothing more comforting than the aroma of freshly baked Christmas cookies filling the kitchen. In this video, I’m sharing a classic holiday cookie recipe with a buttery, tender texture—perfect for cutting, baking, and decorating with beautiful royal icing.
These cookies are ideal for Christmas gatherings, gifting, or cozy afternoons baking with family. The dough can be prepared ahead of time, making it a stress-free and festive holiday treat.
CHRISTMAS COOKIES -
COOKIE INGREDIENTS:
9 Lb. (440 g.) all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons cream cheese, room temperature
6 Lb. (360 g.) unsalted butter, softened (room temperature)
1½ cups (300 g.) granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 teaspoons lemon zest
ROYAL ICING:
4 cups powdered sugar (icing sugar)
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Water, if needed
Food coloring (gel or liquid)
PROCEDURE -
DOUGH:
1. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cream of tartar.
2. In a stand mixer, beat the butter, sugar, and cream cheese until light and fluffy.
3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix until fully incorporated.
4. Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients and mix just until combined to form a dough.
5. Cover the dough and let it rest in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or up to 4 days.
6. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 5 mm (¼ inch) thick.
7. Cut out the cookies using cookie cutters (dip cutters in flour to prevent sticking). Refrigerate the cut cookies for 20 minutes before baking.
8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 10–12 minutes.
9. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.
ROYAL ICING:
10. Add the salt to the powdered sugar and mix well.
11. In a bowl, whisk the egg whites with the vanilla extract. Slowly add the powdered sugar while whisking until a smooth icing forms. Add a small amount of water if needed to reach the desired consistency.
