Shenandoah River State Park | Solo RV Travel and Adventure GPS

I use every daylight hour of this short day to trace a path along the scenic Shenandoah River, South Fork, near the peaks of Virginia's Massanutten Mountain. Winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year, as it ushers in the official start of winter.

Nations and cultures around the world have celebrated the solstice since ancient times with varying rituals and traditions. The influence of those solstice traditions can still be seen in our celebrations of holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah, Britannica notes.

Massanutten Mountain is a 50-mile long, 6-mile wide mountain range in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Part of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, Massanutten Mountain is located in the Shenandoah Valley of northern Virginia. The north and south forks of the Shenandoah River flank the mountain.
