C1/107/Aygo Starter Motor Replacement

In today’s video, I enlist Kayne’s help in changing a starter motor for Rachel’s car. Since her car last appeared on the channel, it has miraculously changed from a Hyundai Getz to a Peugeot 107… she saw the light and joined the City Bug Club

The problem with this car is that it isn’t starting right. It is sounding lazy when it starts, which at first made me think it might be the battery. We took the car to a local motor factor to have the battery tested and it was in borderline replacement territory, so she had a new battery installed. This appeared to resolve the issue, so she went down the road on her merry way. A week or so later, it started to become lazy when starting the car. My engineer senses were tingling, it looked to me like the new battery had enough cold cranking amps to force a lazy starter motor to start the engine, so the starter motor looked to be at fault.

I obtained a used starter motor from a friend of mine for a very reasonable price. It was from a running and driving car and I heard it start the engine before being removed. It was then installed on the 107 by undoing 2x 14mm bolts holding the starter motor to the bell housing and an 8mm and a 13mm nut holding on the power supply cables and then removing the unit from the car. On inspection of the old unit, it was covered in what looked to be old engine oil and road grime. My best guess here is that it had bee subjected to an oil leak caused by a blocked PCV valve. I know that the PCV valve is clean because I did it myself, so I believe the issue to be resolved. As you can see in the video, the car not starts as it should, without any hesitation at all.
