The Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple in Mysore has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Built during the Hoysala Empire, the temple was originally located in the village of Kannambadi and dedicated to Lord Krishna in his form as Venugopala, the flute-playing cowherd. The temple's intricate carvings and sculptures showcase the characteristic Hoysala architectural style.
The temple's history took a dramatic turn with the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in the early 20th century. The dam's creation led to the submersion of the temple and surrounding villages, forcing the relocation of the residents to a new village in Hosa Knnambadi. Although the original temple was submerged, the main idol of Venugopalaswamy was relocated to the new village before the submersion. The temple remained underwater for over 70 years.
In 2002, the Khoday Foundation, led by philanthropist Sri Hari Khoday, initiated a massive restoration project to relocate and rebuild the temple near the rehabilitated village. Despite initial plans to shift the complex to Madhuvana Park in Mysore, the foundation ultimately decided to rebuild the temple near Hosa Kannambadi, about 1 km north of the original site. Today, the restored temple stands as a magnificent example of Hoysala architecture, with beautifully carved motifs adorning its ceilings, pillars, and walls.
