Katana Shinai - Full contact sparring on a budget [sword talk/katana training]

Today I talk about the katana shinai. This is an incredible sparring sword for practitioners looking for more realism in their sparring than the safety swords while keeping the versatility of striking zones compared to a shinai. I would not deem it completely safe to use without bogu - I think a headgear is required at the very least and some gardening gloves would make a fine addition to protect the hands. Also, there is a safety issue with it that led to mine breaking after about 3 weeks of use. I have reached out to SMAI and hopefully the issue will be fixed for future.

I also give a brief run through of the evolution of safety and sparring weapons in Japan which was also reflected in Korea - especially surrounding the Japanese colonial period.
