Medicaid enrollees are at a high risk of food and nutrition insecurity, which negatively impacts physical and mental health and increases healthcare costs. However, every state Medicaid system has opportunities to develop enabling environments for increasing access to Food is Medicine services and federal nutrition programs like SNAP and WIC. Our speakers will describe the range of policy tools to increase Medicaid’s involvement and investment in addressing food security and tools to support such advocacy. The session will give early insights into the implementation progress, initial successes, and lessons learned from Food Bank Council of Michigan’s experience engaging with Michigan DHHS and the state’s Medicaid managed care health insurance plans. We’ll present a state case study with the Food Bank Council of Michigan, which has been engaging in Food is Medicine in partnership with Michigan DHHS and the Medicaid managed care health insurance plans.
