Schools, hospitals, and prisons are not neutral. Every institution participates in systemic oppression and the dehumanization of people. In this extended conversation from the Revolutionary Social Work Podcast, Brotha KD explains why no one can claim to stand outside these structures. Participation — financial, professional, or cultural — requires honest recognition of complicity.
Oppression is not abstract. Oppression has faces. As the ancient Kemetic teacher Ptahhotep taught, the heart is the seat of intelligence and moral discernment. When cognitive dissonance emerges (when institutional roles clash with values) it cannot be suppressed- interrogate it with honesty and courage.
Brotha KD reflects on his own journey of walking away from oppressive systems, naming the cost of moral injury for social workers embedded in carceral structures. Liberation requires patience, self-knowledge, and collective healing. The process of unlearning and relearning may take years, but revolution is permanent.
