In July 2018, an ATR 72 from Royal Air Maroc Express impacted the sea while on approach to Al Hoceima airport in Morocco. How could that happen?
The story about RAM Express flight 439 tells how an overconfident captain directed his first officer to fly an unstabilized approach and to descend below MDA. The approach violated every operational procedure in the company, including stabilized approach and Constant Angle Non-Precision Approach. After hitting the sea hard two times, the airplane managed to climb safely away and landed at another airport.
None of the persons on board were injured, but the airplane suffered damages. Therefore, the incident was classified as an accident. The official accident report blamed the crew for switching off the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS), but this was not the cause of the accident. The report barely discussed humans factors, and the weather conditions were not even given a thought.
Hopefully, we can learn from this and prevent similar accidents from happening again.
