Kihon Happo - Technique vs Principle (Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu)

In this video, I discuss two commonly used terms in the Bujinkan - Technique and Principle. Both have purpose and I explain my views on them in the context of our Bujinkan Kihon Happo.

When it comes to Kihon Happo, they are not just 8 basic techniques. However, it is through proper practice and understanding of these techniques that we unlock the principles behind them. Once we understand the principle, then this leads to many techniques , including weapons.

What is important to note is that the Kihon Happo are not Kihon Hajutsu. The name is not "8 basic techniques", but rather "8 basic principles" (or "methods"). However, there is a reason there are very specific techniques, or kata, which have been handed down through the generations. Even the late Takamatsu Soke made a point regarding the deep significance of the Kihon Happo as being the foundation of all martial arts. Why is that? Why only 8 kata? Why specifically these kata? Those are valid questions which can only be truly learned from one's own growth and understanding gained through years of practice. But, what kind of practice?

It is easy to simply get trapped into seeing the Kihon Happo as only a set of techniques. Equally, it is easy to skip the deep technical learning and correct practice of the Kihon Happo Kata and just "play" with what one thinks is the principle or "feeling" of them. Of course, the "play" is always more fun than the hard work of dedicated, focused, and mindful practice....

In my opinion, the student first has to be taught the correct technical mechanics of the technique/kata and that has to be practiced enough until the natural progression leads them to understanding the principle behind it. They are not fight techniques or scenarios. They are learning models and should be approached as such.
