The Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus in Truro, Nova Scotia has, like most universities, been heated for decades using a district heating network and central heat plant. To reduce costs, increase energy security, ensure energy expenditures stayed in the local economy, and reduce GHG emissions, Dalhousie fuel-switched the campus network from oil to biomass. The new central plant co-generates electricity in addition to heat, thereby further lowering heating costs for the university. This is an approach that is straightforward, from a technical perspective, to replicate at many institutional district heating networks.
