Nestled in the picturesque village of Steppingley, Bedfordshire, St Lawrence Church stands as a testament to centuries of faith, history, and architectural beauty. Built from local red-brown sandstone sourced from Green End, Maulden, the church showcases the Early Decorated and Perpendicular styles of 14th-century architecture.
A Story of Resilience and Restoration
The original church, dating back to medieval times, tragically collapsed during repair efforts to fix an outward-leaning wall. In 1860, the church was rebuilt on the same site, designed by the renowned architect Henry Clutton, who also crafted the Romanesque church at Woburn. The reconstruction was generously funded by the Duke of Bedford and the rector.
In 1912, the church underwent restoration, once again supported by the Duke of Bedford. During excavations in the chancel, an astonishing 531 English and Scottish silver coins from the 13th century were discovered. These are believed to have been offerings from patients of John de Schorne, a former rector famed for his healing powers.
Modern-Day Preservation
The church remains a cherished landmark, with ongoing efforts to maintain its historical integrity. In 2015, after extensive fundraising, the roof was repaired, ensuring its weatherproofing, and a new heating system was installed. More recently, in February 2020, the church bells were refurbished, re-hung, and blessed, marking another milestone in its preservation.
A Place of Worship and Community
Today, St Lawrence Church continues to serve as a spiritual home for the local community. It is open daily for private prayer, and Sunday services are held regularly. Whether you're drawn by its rich history, stunning architecture, or peaceful atmosphere, this church remains a symbol of faith and resilience
