The Wand Pain Free Dentistry - Painless Anaesthesia With the Wand

My name's Dr Graham Campbell. I'm a Associate Dentist here at Pure Dental Health, in Truro, and today I'm going to tell you a little bit about The Wand.

The wand is a pain-free injection technique.

The wand works by delivering the numbing agent very slowly, but under a high pressure, controlled by the computer. Which allows me to deliver the anaesthetic, or the numbing agent effectively, but not enough pressure for a patient to be able to feel it.

So this is essentially the wand. As you can see, it's a lot less intimidating compared to the conventional syringe. The great thing about the wand is that I can precisely numb up the tooth I want to work on.

If this is the tooth in question, we have a ligament that runs around the tooth, and I'm able to administer the numbing agent just in the gum beside the tooth, and that flows all the way around the tooth here, and therefore numbs up just the tooth you want to work on.

One of the things I'm a strong believer of is making sure patients are comfortable during their dental treatment. One of the worst feelings, as an operator, or a dentist is your patients being in pain.

To be able to have a device which I can use every day, which allows me to do my job well, and to allow a patient to be comfortable during that is brilliant.

"I had a really bad experience with a dentist a few years ago, where I was given an injection and I didn't have a very good reaction to it. Since then I've been absolutely terrified of any injections.

So I really wanted to try using the wand. Absolutely didn't feel anything. If anything, it just felt like someone was pressing a little bit on my gum, but I didn't feel that sharp scratch that dentists always warn you about.

My mouth isn't numb. My lips not numb or anything.

So it's great, so I can just go and get on with it."
