I’m in Oaxaca, Mexico, staying at Hostel Nordés, just a 5-minute walk from the historic Zócalo.
Today I rent a scooter from Café Trébol to explore the surrounding villages famous for pottery. Oaxaca’s ceramic tradition is incredible—each village creates unique styles: black pottery in San Bartolo Coyotepec, red pottery in other towns, and even green pottery depending on the local clay.
I visit Emmanuel’s shop, where the owner handcrafts beautiful black clay pieces. I buy a stunning round bowl with cut-out designs that can be used as a candleholder, planter, or simply as art.
Continuing my ride, I reach Cuilapan de Guerrero, home to the breathtaking Ex-Convent of Santiago Apóstol (built in 1555 but never completed). With its grand arches, unfinished stone columns, open courtyards, and warm sunlight over the sand-colored walls, this site feels magical and deeply historic. Here I also see a statue of Vicente Guerrero, one of Mexico’s first presidents, executed on this very spot in 1831.
The day ends with dinner at Coquina Hur Xhá, where I try Oaxaca’s legendary mole—the “17 chili mole.” Delicious, rich, and unforgettable, it earns a solid 1 Mm on the Mm-scale.
