The opening overture, in the grand French tradition, unfolds with stately dotted rhythms before cascading into intricate counterpoint. What follows is a sequence of dances—each one a masterpiece of refinement and contrast. An Overture after the French Manner BWV831 and A Concerto after the Italian Taste BWV971 were written for two-manual harpsichord and published in the spring of 1735 as part II of the Clavier-Übung. The four parts of Bach's Clavier-Übung Series emerged as a systematic and complete survey of the art of keyboard music as seen from Bach's perspective. Composed of eleven movements and the largest keyboard suite, the work provides an imaginative exhibition of French manners of the genre and the most significant contrast to its counterpart of the Italian Concerto in form, style, and tritone interval.
