Ofri Nehemya: An instrument as a one man band

Ofri Nehemya is what you call an explosive drummer: live, his dynamic spectrum ranges from whisper-fine to heavy artillery. In this clip, too, you can experience how he sneaks into his solo - how the bass drum then create a kind of counterpoint to the treble-heavy work of the brushes, only to enter, after a change of sticks, into conversation with the toms. There the orchestral possibilities of the drum set are explored almost exemplarily, and the extras of the instrument in stephan's basement are showcased masterfully without being just sound gimmickry.
Ofri Nehemya doesn't just play drums, he makes music with percussive sound bodies and thus becomes a one man band – unlike Nate Wood, though, who plays other instruments while sitting at the drum set. Here the drum set is an orchestra in its own right. Initially, the beat is not the primary focus - rather it is part of the overall sound, much like in a band. Achieving this is already high art. And indeed, the fact that the one-man orchestra can also get loud sometimes becomes apparent when a complex backbeat gradually begins to emerge. Just as a tutti in a symphony orchestra gets under your skin, all the instruments played by Ofri Nehemya at the same time now sound skillfully orchestrated together, and the "band" begins to soar...

Ofri Nehemya: Ein Instrument als One man band

Ofri Nehemya ist das, was man einen explosiven Schlagzeuger nennt: Live reicht sein dynamisches Spektrum von flüsterfein bis zur schweren Artillerie. Auch in diesem Clip ist zu erleben, wie er sich in sein Solo reinschleicht – wie dann die Bassdrum eine Art Gegenspur zur höhenlastigen Arbeit der Besen legt, um später, nach einem Schlägerwechsel, mit den Toms ins Gespräch zu kommen. Da werden die orchestralen Mittel des Drum set fast exemplarisch ausgeschöpft, und die Extras des Basement-Instruments kommen optimal zur Geltung, ohne nur ein Klang-Gimmick zu sein.
Ofri Nehemya spielt nicht bloss Schlagzeug, er macht mit perkussiven Klang-körpern Musik und wird so zur One man band – anders allerdings als ein Nate Wood, der am Schlagzeug sitzend noch andere Instrumente spielt. Hier ist das Drum set ein Orchester in its own right. Zunächst steht der Beat dabei gar nicht so sehr im Vordergrund – eher ist er Teil des Gesamtsounds, so wie bei einer Band. Dies zu erreichen, ist schon hohe Kunst. Und eben: Dass das One-man-Orchester auch mal laut werden kann, zeigt sich, als allmählich ein vertrackter Backbeat sich festzusetzen beginnt. So wie ein Tutti im Sinfonieorchester un¬ter die Haut geht, klingen jetzt alle Instrumente, die Ofri Nehemya in Personal¬union bedient, souverän orchestriert zusammen, und die «Band» beginnt zu fliegen…
