Ano Doliana is a village in the province of North Kynouria in Arcadia. It is built amphitheatrically and extends at an altitude of between 900 and 1150 meters on the northern slopes of Parnonas. It has beautiful cobblestone streets, stone-built houses and a wonderful view of the Tripoli plain, Mainalos and Helmos mountains.
At a distance of approximately 175 km from Athens and 20 km from Tripoli and 33 km from the star.Apo. It is located in a lush environment with chestnut, walnut and plane trees, offering an ideal setting for escapes into nature. In addition, there is a natural forest with fir trees that starts from the North-Eastern edge of the settlement. It is worth noting that we visited the village on the second day of this year. Which means that at this time all the deciduous trees have shed their leaves.
There are 2 large churches in the village, the first is of the Virgin Mary, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1810 from local marble. Initially it was of royal architecture, but after its reconstruction was transformed into a basilica with a dome. Ιts wooden interior decoration was burned down during the Greek revolution of 1821. The second big Church saint is Saint George, which is also pre-revolutionary and was used as the headquarters of Kehaya Bey during the Battle of Doliana.
The village has experienced mild tourist development in recent years, taking advantage of its natural beauty and geographical location, attracting many visitors, mainly on weekends in autumn and winter, while it is also popular with hikers during the spring and autumn periods. In the village there are 2 taverns and 2 traditional cafes. For accommodation, 5 options are offered within the village, from guesthouses and traditional houses, as well as the forest village, which is located just outside the settlement and consists of 20 wooden houses.
Ano Doliana is divided into 7 individual neighborhoods, at the lowest point lies the groves, while higher are Giorgis and Mesochori. The central part of the village is known as Panagia the market, while further east are Aggeleiika and Choreftarou where the forest guesthouse is located.
As for the origin of the settlement's name, the most prevalent version is that the name has Slavic roots and the word ἀμάτης means valley, while ἀγωλά refers to a place in a ravine.
On the first Saturday of November every year, after the harvest of the chestnuts that abound in the surrounding area has been completed, the chestnut festival is organized, during which visitors have the opportunity to enjoy chestnuts in many different recipes for food, sweets and liqueurs.
At a distance of one and a half kilometers from the center of the village there is the picturesque chapel of Agios Giannis. To get there, you must follow the road towards the settlement of Dragouni and after the waterfall in the stream of Agios Giannis you will come across the small chapel of the same name.
At the entrance to the village, and specifically in the area called the Tsakonas stream, the bust of Nikitas Stamatelopoulos, or Nikitaras, has been placed. This area was the main battlefield of the Doliana battle. This battle was fought on May 18, 1821 during the Greek Revolution. There, Nikitaras held the upper Doliana with 300 men. He managed to repel 4000 Turks who attacked with artillery and caused great losses to the opponent. In the wider area of ​​Doliania, two more battles took place on 16/06/1825 and in August 1826. In the last battle, houses in the village and the churches of St. George and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary were set on fire.
A point to visit is the historical and ethnographic Museum of Doliana, which is housed in the house of the Christofilis brothers. This particular house is also known as the tabouri of Nikitaras, as it was there that Taras fortified himself with a group of his comrades during the victorious battle of Doliana. There you can see exhibits that relate to both the battle of Doliana and the folklore that refer to the everyday life of the locals, from the old days.
