25 ans après plusieurs intégrales des 24 caprices en concert, j’ai eu cette année envie de revivre au quotidien avec ce travail technique si subtil et les étranges atmosphères que créent ces caprices. Cela m’était devenu impossible durant plusieurs années de problèmes physiques et c’est un travail en devenir car je les rejouerai plusieurs fois dans le courant de l’année prochaine. Je vous les livre tels que captés par moi-même dans le festival « Liszt en Provence », sans montage aucun, à l’instar de ma version live de 2001 à Tokyo, il est vrai, plus aboutie car succédant à une période plus stable sur le plan instrumental.

Il sera intéressant lors de l’année prochaine, si je parviens à ajuster encore certaines choses, de voir quelle perte purement due à l’âge, on a dans ce répertoire et sur quels points ils se manifestent au violon. Actuellement je ne saurais dire si les imperfections sont dues à ce facteur ou tout simplement au remaniement de plusieurs points techniques qui n’ont pas eu encore le temps de se fluidifier.

25 years after performing several complete live renditions of the 24 Caprices, I felt this year the desire to live again, on a daily basis, with this subtle technical work and with the strange atmospheres these pieces create. For several years this had become impossible because of physical problems, and this is very much a work in progress, as I will perform them again several times over the coming year. I offer them here exactly as captured by myself at the “Liszt en Provence” festival, with no editing whatsoever — in the same spirit as my 2001 live version in Tokyo, which was admittedly more polished as it followed a more stable instrumental period.

It will be interesting, over the coming year, if I manage to adjust certain things further, to observe what loss is purely due to age in this repertoire and where it manifests itself on the violin. At present, I cannot say whether the imperfections come from that factor or simply from the reworking of various technical points that have not yet had time to settle.
