There are times in every life when challenges seem to cloud the path forward, but often it is precisely these challenges that give shape to who we become. In Chapter 27 (titled “The Links of Interdependent Co-Arising”) of The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching: Transforming Suffering into Peace, Joy, and Liberation, the beloved Vietnamese Zen master, poet, and peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh (1926–2022) explores the nuanced ways in which conditions shape our inner life. One that stood out to me in particular was the “condition for development,” which refers to how both supportive and adverse experiences contribute to the growth of insight, faith, and resolve. (See below for the full passage.)
This teaching resonated with me in a very personal way. There have been seasons in my life where I mistook ease for progress, and others where I discovered, almost against my will, that the obstacles I dreaded were the very things that clarified my values and deepened my compassion. In moments of emotional disorientation or self-doubt, what truly sustained me was not the absence of struggle, but the presence of something rooted within: conviction, intention, a sense that my questions mattered even if the answers were not yet clear. It was often in conversation with close friends, or in making videos like this one, that I began to see that seed of confidence being nurtured. We do not always choose the conditions, but we can become aware of how they move us.
As Nhất Hạnh writes, even the Buddha’s missteps in extreme austerity became fertile ground for wisdom. This passage reminds me that setbacks and confusion are essential parts of the path. They reveal us to ourselves, and if we stay with them gently and honestly, they become teachers. 🌸
“The second kind of condition, according to the Sarvastivadins, is called ‘condition for development’ (adhipati-pratyaya). This can help certain seeds develop or can obstruct their development. Everyone has a seed of faith, or confidence, for example. If you have friends who water this seed in you, it will grow strong. But if you meet only favorable conditions, you will not realize how precious this seed is. Obstacles along the path can help our determination and compassion grow. Obstacles teach us about our strengths and weaknesses, so that we can know ourselves better and see in which direction we truly wish to go. One could say that the Buddha’s practice of austerity was unfavorable to the development of his path, but if he had not undertaken those practices and failed in them, he would not have learned and later taught the Middle Way. When your intention is strong, unfavorable conditions will not dishearten you. In difficult moments, you will stick to your friends, fortify your convictions, and not give up.”
