During the early 1960's Skip Savage was in the Air Force and fortunate enough to be stationed in Orlando Florida. Jerry Bowles, another service member from California, introduced Skip to surfing on their travels to the surf breaks around Patrick's Air Force Base in Brevard County. Skip befriended Pat O'hare, a surfboard shaper in Cocoa Beach and a business deal was reached in 1966 as Skip was nearing the end of his enlistment.
In the Spring of 1967, Skip opened the Surf Shop East surf shop in Rehoboth Delaware. Eventually, Skip became a Greg Noll Dealer. In the summer of 1968 Yancy Spencer III traveled from his home area of Pensacola FL to Delaware, met Skip, was given a surfboard and became a team member.
In 1969, Skip traveled to Pensacola where he opened his second shop, Greg Noll Surfboards. Skip by his own admission says business suffered because he thought he could sell surfboards in the lineup rather than the shop. By 1971 both shops closed. The Florida shop laid the foundation for what is now the Innerlight surf shop.
