Pessaries can be a fantastic support for women who experience prolapse. They can be fitted and prescribed by a pelvic health physiotherapist, doctor or continence nurse. The incontinence dish pessary provides a modetate level of structural support for the bladder and uterus, as well as the urethra to help with stress urinary incontinence (eg. bladder leaking related to an increase in intra-abdominal pressure - like coughing, laughing, sneezing, lifting, movement or exercise).
Here are some helpful tips for inserting and removing your pessary.
1. Wash your hands and use lubricant as needed
2. You can lie down or stand to insert your pessary
3. You can fold it gently to insert more comfortably
4. The thickening must be sitting closest to the entrance of the vagina to be behind the urethra and therefore providing continence support.
5. To remove, you'll be best to use a thumb in front of the knob and start to bring it down. Some people find doing a gentle Kegel as the remove it can help to narrow the width of the pessary and create less stretch on the tissues.
