In this video we visit Melbourne's new Metro Tunnel! On the 30th November 2025 the Metro Tunnel opened after decades of planning and years of construction. This new 9km underground railway is the biggest change to Melbourne's rail network since the City Loop opened in the 1980's and links the Sunbury Line in the north west to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines in the south east. The new tunnel improves the capacity of Melbourne's rail network and help ease congestion on the busy Swanston Street/St Kilda Road tram corridor. It also provides additional rail coverage to major destinations such as Melbourne’s hospital precinct, Melbourne University, the Shrine of Remembrance, and the St Kilda Road commercial precinct.
The tunnel features five stations at Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall, and Anzac, and in this video we visit all five stations! All trains through the Metro Tunnel are operated by the High Capacity Metro Train's (HCMT's)
From the 30th November 2025 to the 31st January 2026 trains will operate under the 'Summer Start' timetable; which sees trains run every 20 minutes between 10am - 3pm on weekdays, and 10am - 7pm on weekends alongside the existing timetable for the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury lines. On top of this there's also free weekend travel across Victoria until the 1st February 2026 to encourage people to check out the new tunnel.
On the 1st February 2026 the tunnel will fully open with a new timetable which will see all services utilise the tunnel with upgraded turn-up-and-go frequencies.
