Having debated with myself the pros and cons of leaving the headstock area "untouched", in the end I decided to take the whole surface down, incl. where the headstock sits. I anyway started with he lowest area on the bed (most worn) and worked my way out from there, leaving the reference areas as long as possible. The flatness came in good, although I may have to do some more pin pointing (finish scraping), but overall is pleased with the texture also.
