Hello coaches, today’s session is about Combination play in the final 3rd. We look at how the primary team should combine with others in the final 3rd, When to combine and when to go alone and why it effective to use numbers up in the final 3rd. For the secondary team we should address when to press, hold or drop and pressure, cover and balance.
Warm Up
Time: 15mins
Work Rate: 4 mins
Rest: 1 min
Reps: 3.
Set up: Players are set up in a 4-3-3 formation.
Organization
A: #4 (center back), plays ball up to holding mid. 2 and 3
(fullbacks) move up to offer support (release valve). 6
checks should and can turn. Plays 8 or 10 (take turns) 8 (or
10) lays ball off for 2 (fullback) to warm up keepers hands.
B: #4 passes to #6, #6 checks shoulder drops ball to #4, 4
sends the ball forward to 10 who lays it off to the #3 to
warm up keepers hands
C: (Not pictured) #4 passes to #6 who checks shoulder and
drops the ball back to 4, 4 plays to 10 but now 6 supports. Drops the ball to 6 who opens up to find 3 on the outside. 3
then hits the keeper.
Coaching Points
Quality of weight, accuracy of pass and touch
Movement off the ball by the 2 and 3
Scanning of the field from 6
Body shape when receiving and asking for the ball
Visual communication to show where you want the ball.

Set up - Functional Practice 3v3 (+2) 2N
Organization
Ball is played into Blue. There aim is to get the ball to
green. They can use Yellow for depth and 2 and 3 to
provide width. The 2 and 3 is only allowed to attack not to
defend. It is the responsibility of the 8, 6 and 10 to defend
the ball from getting to the striker (Green or yellow)

Quality and weight of touch
Movement off the ball and position of hips
Speed of play - Knowing when to play fast and when to control the tempo
Timing of full back to get into position
Movement of striker to get open
Attacking Principles: Depth, width and height
Functional Practice
Time: 21 mins
Work Rate: 6 mins
Rest: 1 min
Reps: 3.
Set up - 7v8
Organization: Ball starts with coach. He can play any player, and the team must adapt based on where the ball is played. 2 and 3 start off field but must give options to the midfield to stretch them. 6 is allowed on the field but
is encouraged to always be behind the ball. Blue are going to goal. Red are looking to combine with their 9 to go to
goal.
Coaching Points
Movement off the ball
Speed of play (When to increase tempo and when to be
patient)
2 and 7, 3 and 11 working together by offering
alternative solutions. i.e 7 goes in so 2 goes out looking for overlap. 11 goes wide so 3 offers central depth.
Connectivity in the half spaces from striker and wingers
Connectivity between AMC and striker. Movements off the ball
