John Cage's Ear for EAR, composed 1983. Recorded live at Ansgars Kirke, Odense, Denmark, November 20th 2017. Ars Nova Copenhagen, Paul Hillier.
Cage wrote ear for EAR as a commission from EAR Magazine in celebration of its tenth anniversary. It is a very simple composition, consisting of one page with eleven lines of music composed in antiphonal style, a solo statement with a choral response. The subtitle (Antiphonies) refers to works in the Roman-Catholic Liturgy, in which two choirs sing in alternation. The text is wordless and uses only the letters found in the word EAR.
