Woodturning - Hollow Form Vessel Breaks on the Lathe - Woodworking Fail

This was a pretty sketchy woodturning project from the start, however I'm fully aware of the danger and risks involved. I'm sure some of you will be skeptical of my sanity and many will want to warn me how dangerous it is to do this or that and "what could have happened." No need. I'm all good. This IS a potentially dangerous project and I don't condone anyone attempting something beyond their skill level, their comfort level, or that makes them at all hesitant. Woodturning can be dangerous when you push limits, as I was probably (definitely) doing. This was the most violent breakage I've had in the shop in a long time, maybe ever. This is exactly why you should always wear a face shield - watch the chunk of wood fly right past my head. Anyway, a few candid thoughts about the project...

From the start, I wasn't sure it would stay together. The more I turned, the more I inspected it, and the more I grew skeptical about pulling it off. That said, I almost pulled it off. I was just about done cutting with the curved hollowing tool when the vessel broke... or rather, when I broke it. I should have given myself more room to work inside before trying to reach the outermost part of the inner wall. Had I done that, the wood that caught the tool wouldn't have been there, but I pushed my luck.

This was a spectacular break. Thin wood like this shatters into numerous projectiles in the blink of an eye! I've only had a few happen to this degree in my 13 years of turning, so I'm glad I got one on video to share. Try not to jump when it finally blows up... I know exactly when it happens and I still jump half the time. Enjoy. Be careful out there.
