During the Angolan Civil War, the FNLA recruited mercenaries from the UK, US and South Africa to fight the MPLA. After the FNLA's defeat in 1976, many were captured and charged with armed aggression and breaching neutrality laws. Between February and June, thirteen were tried in Luanda in a case used by the MPLA to denounce foreign interference and assert its rule.
The verdicts were expected, but the trial drew international attention. Four, including three Britons and one American, were sentenced to death; the rest received long prison terms.
