OSCAR D'LEON ORCHESTRA live at North Sea Jazz 1996
Date & Location: SUNDAY 14 JULY 1996 • JAN STEEN ZAAL • Congress Centre, The Hague, The Netherlands
Oscar Emilio Léon Somoza (born July 11, 1943 in Caracas), better known as Oscar D'León, is a Venezuelan singer and bassist. He mainly sings salsa in Spanish. His best-known song is Lloraras (You will cry!, or You will regret it!) from 1975. D'León is the son of Carmen Dionisia Somoza and Justo Léon. He taught himself to play the double bass and formed bands such as La Golden Star and Los Psicodélicos in which he improvised and also took on the role of singer/entertainer. In 1972, D'León formed the band La Dimensión Latina with percussionist José Rodríguez and trombonists César Monge and José Antonio Rojas. Four years later he left and started La Salsa Mayor (1976) and La Critica (1978); These bands existed side by side for a short time and gave D'León the opportunity to invite his musical heroes for guest roles. In the 80s, D'León's popularity grew in parallel with salsa; his retro style attracted a wide audience, especially in Cuba. He came to the Netherlands for the first time in 1985. After a while, D'León decided to perform without a bass because, according to him, it was repeatedly smashed by customs officers during drug checks. His moustache remains as his trademark. D'León was a guest with the Japanese band Orquesta de la Luz and went on tour with Celia Cruz. In 2014, he made a guest appearance on the album Dejame Asi by Dutch trumpeter Maite Hontelé. D'León is committed to a foundation that helps Colombians who have lost their homes, land or jobs due to paramilitary regimes. He is married and has passed on his musical genes to his children. For the 1992 album El Rey De Los Soneros he recorded the duet Padre e hijo with his son and bandmate Yorman. His other son Jimmy is also a singer and bassist; his eldest daughter Irosca is a pianist and dancer, and his youngest daughter Adiaroz also seems to be pursuing a career in music.
