Missed assignments, minimal attendance, checked out students, low test scores. As teachers, we’ve all been disheartened by these student behaviors. Yet, sometimes behaviors that seem apathetic or disengaged are instead indicators of exclusion—a sign that our teaching is reaching only some students while making others feel frustrated, alienated, and marginalized. Inclusive pedagogy encourages us to think differently, to be self-reflective and critical as we consider: Who are we teaching to and for? How do our methods exclude learners? How can we actively foster inclusion through our teaching methods? In this workshop, we guide participants in addressing these questions and provide eight strategies for creating inclusive, energized learning environments.
