Unexpected satellite frequencies causing problems for radio astronomy

Starlink satellites are transmitting unexpected frequencies which interfere with the work of radio astronomers, according to Curtin University Radio Astronomy Professor Steven Tingay.
“We’ve been doing a lot of observations using radio telescopes to try and understand the impact of radio interference generated by those satellites on our ability to do radio astronomy,” Professor Tingay told Sky News Australia.
The satellites are designed to provide internet communications around the globe including to remote regions.
“But the consequence for astronomy is that there’s really now no place on earth that our telescopes can escape those signals,” he said.
“So that’s a problem for astronomy.”
