During the siege in 1203, Philip II, impressed by the strength of the castle, decided not to assault it directly but to lay siege to it, waiting for the internal supplies to run out. After a long siege, Philip Augustus managed to capture the castle on March 6, 1204, marking a pivotal moment in the struggle for control of Normandy.
