Welcome back to The Old Cookbook Show! This Sunday, we're diving into a wartime gem from Prince Edward Island – "Home Recipes for Home and Country" (1943), a community cookbook compiled by the PEI Women's Institute during WWII. 🇨🇦
Today’s featured recipe: a Cottage Cheese Pie made with humble ingredients like cottage cheese, milk, sour cream, fresh orange zest, and nutmeg – baked in an all-butter crust. This vintage dessert is surprisingly light, zesty, and perfect for summer!
We explore the history of wartime cooking in Canada, ingredient substitutions during rationing, and the culinary creativity of rural communities. We also chat about sour cream snobbery 🥣, the elusive hunt for 'real' sour cream in Old Quebec City, and a quick spice lesson on nutmeg vs. mace.
Plus, we discuss our ongoing support for Hope Air, a Canadian charity that helps patients access life-saving healthcare by flying them from remote communities to major cities. ✈️❤️

3 tb. flour
¼ tsp. salt
1 or 2 egg yolks
1 c. soft cottage cheese put through sieve
Juice and rind of ½ orange

1 c. sweet milk
Grated nutmeg

Mix in order given. Pour into pie shell. Sprinkle with cocoanut
and bake in moderate oven.
So many people asking how long I baked this for... Not to be flippant, but: Until it was done.
It's a custard pie, so I know in my oven 40 minutes was a good starting point to do the first check.
Here's the thing, unless you have my oven, are baking in that metal pie tin, and are baking on a pizza stone - your baking time will vary wildly. That's a huge reason why in these early cookbooks no time was given. Everyone's oven will be different, everyone's pie plate will be different, etc, etc, etc.
Even today when recipes do give a time, the comment sections are filled with angry people screaming that the recipe sucks because they burnt (XXXXX), or the recipe sucks because it took too long to cook.
