The Rio Grande Railroad only ran in two states, but its critical position made it a strong bridge line connection for the Burlington and later BN, Western Pacific, and Rock Island routings to the rich California markets. The Rio Grande Partner chalked up three states, but was invaluable in Rio Grandes competition with Union Pacific and Southern Pacific. Both roads operated efficiently, and profitably. Rio Grande actually bought the much larger SP in the 90s, but both became fallen flags railroads to the union Pacific behemoth.
