Even today, many regions in China still retain the mourning dress system. Besides differences in fabric and manufacturing methods, the mourning clothes also represent the duration of mourning, ranging from three years to three months. Furthermore, the five levels of mourning relationships also indicate the closeness of kinship. Relatives within nine generations of the same great-grandfather are generally considered family, and marriage is only permitted between people outside the five levels of mourning relationships.
斩衰(zhǎn cuī):The mourning clothes for the closest relatives are made of the coarsest linen, without edging or sewing, to express extreme grief. They are generally worn for parents.
齐衰(qí cuī):The second lowest grade of mourning, made of finer linen but with unadorned edges, is worn for grandparents, uncles, and other relatives.
大功(dà gōng):Made of coarse linen, slightly coarser than the Qi Cui, it was worn for siblings, grandparents, etc.
小功(xiǎo gōng):Made of fine linen, for uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins, etc.
缌麻(sī má):The lightest mourning clothes, made of the finest linen, are worn for aunts, uncles, maternal aunts, and married sisters.
