Hollywood has a long history of casting white actors to play non-white roles. Casting white people to play black people, such as in Birth of a Nation, didn't last very long, but casting white people as people of Asian ethnicity or Native Americans happened for most of Hollywood history. With Native Americans, the roles were usually small or extras: Indians used in westerns as generic figures. Only occasionally, such as with white actor Burt Lancaster playing Jim Thorpe in Jim Thorpe: All American was the role a lead role.
But with Asian characters it was different. From The Good Earth and Dragonseed from Hollywood's classic era, up through Peter Sellers as Fu Manchu, the trend of casting white actors as Asians in lead roles continued unabated for decades.
What about sexuality and disability? That type of casting still occurs today. Should it? Let's discuss.
