Welcome to this episode of Fertility Focus!
In today’s video, Gaurav Kant, an experienced andrologist, takes us through everything about embryos in IVF. From what an embryo is, how it grows, and why grading is important to how it affects your chances of a successful IVF outcome, we cover all the key details in simple, easy-to-understand language. If you’re going through IVF or planning for it, this video is packed with insights to guide you.
What are we discussing in the podcast:
✅What is an embryo?
An embryo is the first cell that forms when the egg from a female and the sperm from a male combine. It’s the foundation of human life.
✅How does an embryo grow?
Embryo development begins from a zygote (Day 1) and progresses to 4 cells (Day 2), 8 cells (Day 3), compacted cells (Day 4), and finally a blastocyst (Day 5).
✅Why do all embryos not develop successfully?
Not all eggs fertilize successfully, and even fewer embryos reach the blastocyst stage due to genetic or developmental limitations.
✅What is embryo grading?
Embryo grading is a technique to assess embryo quality at every stage to determine which embryos have the highest chance of resulting in a pregnancy.
✅How is embryo grading done?
It is done by evaluating factors such as the number of cells, fragmentation, and symmetry. Blastocysts are graded based on expansion, inner cell mass, and trophectoderm quality.
✅What are the best embryos for transfer?
Day 5 blastocysts with high grades like 4AA are considered the best for transfer, offering the highest chances of success.
✅What happens to embryos that are slow-growing?
Some embryos may develop into blastocysts on Day 6. If they are of good quality, they can result in similar pregnancy rates as Day 5 embryos.
✅What determines the quality of embryos?
The quality of eggs and sperm plays a major role. Factors such as the female’s age, stimulation protocols, and sperm selection techniques also impact embryo quality.
✅Why is egg quality so important?
Eggs contribute 95% to the growth potential of an embryo, making their quality crucial for successful development.
✅How does sperm quality impact embryos?
Sperm provides genetic material to the embryo. If sperm DNA is fragmented or damaged, it can lead to poor-quality embryos.
✅Why does IVF fail even with good embryos?
Issues like uterine lining quality (endometrium) or genetic abnormalities (aneuploidy) in embryos can lead to failed implantation or miscarriage.
✅What happens to an embryo that doesn’t implant?
If an embryo fails to implant, it stops growing and is shed naturally during the next menstrual cycle.
✅Should you transfer Day 2 or Day 3 embryos?
While Day 5 embryos are preferred, transferring Day 2 or Day 3 embryos can be an option, especially if they are of good quality or lab conditions are not ideal for blastocyst culture.
✅What are the chances of twins with IVF?
Transferring two blastocysts increases the chance of pregnancy by 10% but also raises the risk of twins to 10-15%.
✅How many embryos should be transferred?
Ideally, one high-grade Day 5 embryo is recommended to minimize risks of complications from multiple pregnancies. In some cases, two embryos may be transferred based on patient discussions.
✅What role does the lab play in IVF success?
A high-quality lab with advanced equipment, good air quality, and skilled embryologists ensures better chances of creating high-quality embryos.
