The scene takes place in the theatre of Schön's imagination. A jewel box stage sits in the middle of the vast earthen plane. Schön, a lonely and isolated king wearing the crown he was given in the previous scene, methodically digs his own grave. Lulu's lovers have been everywhere from the Countess Geschwitz, an athlete, a servant, a student and Schön's own son, Alwa who is also Lulu's "step" brother. Dr. Schön has been watching the theatre of his life with his own role being taken by his son. Suddenly he interrupts the action. In a final effort to save Alwa and himself, Schön hurls Lulu toward the grave he has been digging and demands that she shoot herself as there is no escape for his obsession of her except for death. Lulu states as she holds the gun to her own head that he has robbed her of her youth, herself and sold her to his friends, but that she never pretended to be anything else but who she is yet he refuses to admit that he has caught himself in his own deception. Then she turns and shoots him rather than herself. It is Alwa in the next scene who will call the police to come and arrest her.
